Unitrust’s Week of Awareness for International Men’s Day

This International Men’s Day, we have taken the opportunity to raise awareness about a topic that too often remains in the shadows —mental health. As part of our week-long campaign, we invited members of our team to share their personal thoughts and experiences on this important issue, with a special focus on mental health in the security industry.

Security is often perceived as a “macho” profession, where strength can be mistakenly equated with silence. But this stereotype can leave many individuals feeling isolated and unable to seek the help they need. Through honest conversations and the courage of our team members, we hope to break down those barriers and foster a culture where it’s okay to talk.

Day 1: “Be Brave”

EJ opened the week with a heartfelt message: “Be brave.” He shared how therapy helped him regain control during challenging times and emphasised the importance of asking for help when things feel overwhelming. EJ’s honesty set the tone for the week, demonstrating that true strength lies in seeking support and breaking the silence.

Day 2: “Get Help”

Jamal’s advice was clear and direct: “If you feel upset, there’s always someone to talk to—just get the help you need.” He spoke about the value of reaching out and reminded us all that no one should feel they have to face their struggles alone.

Day 3: “Don’t Feel Ashamed or Embarrassed to Ask for Help”

On Wednesday, Liam offered thoughtful insights into the mental health challenges faced by those in the security industry. He highlighted how long, overnight shifts and loneliness can contribute to mental health struggles. His advice: “Don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help.” By sharing his perspective, Liam is helping to break the stigma and encourage others to take that crucial first step.

Day 4: “Pay Attention to Your Colleagues”

In Thursday’s film, Ben Neate made a passionate plea for teamwork that goes beyond the job: “Pay attention to your colleagues.” Ben reminded us all of the importance of looking out for one another and recognising the signs when someone may need support.

Day 5: “Have a Conversation”

Wrapping up the week, our Operations Director, Jonathan Moore, shared his thoughts: “Spend time with people—you might be the only person they speak to all day. Never underestimate the power of saying hello.” Jonathan’s message is a powerful reminder that even small gestures can have a big impact on someone’s mental well-being.

Continuing the Conversation

At Unitrust, we believe that supporting mental health is not just a week-long initiative—it’s an ongoing commitment. By sharing these stories, we hope to inspire others in our industry to create environments where open conversations about mental health are encouraged and supported.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone who participated in this campaign and shared their thoughts and experiences. Together, we can break the stigma and show that true strength lies in supporting one another.
