In our latest blog Kirsty Lay, our Head of People and Culture explains why she believes Unitrust's employee retention rate is higher than the industry standard and provides some useful insights into what motivates people to stay.
The subject of recruitment frequently dominates conversations within the security industry
How do we attract good people? How do we fill vacancies? How do we build the workforce needed for the future? They are all important questions however, perhaps an equally important one, particularly for my team, is understanding why people choose to stay with us year after year.
In many industries, people rarely remain with an organisation because of a single initiative or benefit. More often, they stay because of how they are treated day after day.
Feeling supported matters. Having managers who are visible, approachable and willing to listen matters. Recognition for a job well done matters too, as does having opportunities to learn, develop and progress.
Over the years, I have noticed that among security professionals there is often a strong sense of pride that comes from working in a team that shares high standards and genuinely cares about delivering a good service.
Culture plays a significant role in that. It is reflected in the everyday interactions people have with their colleagues and managers. It is built through trust, good communication and consistency. It certainly cannot be created through a policy document alone.
Importantly, retaining experienced people benefits clients as much as it benefits organisations. Long-serving teams develop stronger site knowledge, build better relationships and provide greater continuity. They understand the environments they work within and often spot issues before they become problems.
Retention is often viewed as an HR metric however, in reality, it is usually a reflection of culture.
When people feel valued, supported and connected to a purpose, they are more likely to build long-term careers. That is why we focus on creating environments where people genuinely want to stay and teams that people enjoy working within.

At Unitrust we know we are getting it right not only through our strong retention but through the relationships our people build with clients, colleagues and the communities they support.
If you would like to join a strong supportive culture and progress your career in the security industry then we would love to hear from you. You can find our current vacancies here
